BlueMotion.

BlueMotion.

With the product label "BlueMotion" Volkswagen has launched a new sustainability initiative. "BlueMotion" identifies vehicles with an overall focus in economy in their design. They combine consumption reducing technology with an equally efficient and dynamic powertrain. "BlueMotion" is thus a response to rising fuel prices and increasing demands of the environmental properties and consumption of vehicles.

In this product line across all model ranges, Volkswagen is bundling and intensifying its activities for environmentally friendly models. In future, the lowest consumption version in several model ranges will be half a litre more economical than previous models. The name "BlueMotion" chosen with reference to the Volkswagen colour blue thus very specifically stands for the sustainable mobility of Volkswagen. With the consistent transfer of consumption-saving technologies to all ranges, Volkswagen is profiting from the know-how and experience with the first 3-litre car, the Lupo 3L TDI. The new product range will contribute to a reduction of the fleet consumption in the entire model range.

The Polo BlueMotion

The first vehicle under the new product label is the Polo BlueMotion. The three-cylinder turbo diesel direct injection car launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006 has a 59 kW engine with a standard consumption of 3.8 litres (89 mpg) diesel over 100 km (61 m). In comparison to the equally powerful and already very economical Polo TDI, the Polo BlueMotion cuts consumption by 0.5 l (1.1 gal) and the carbon dioxide emissions by 20 g/km to 99 g/km. This means that it is the vehicle with the lowest consumption in its class.

The Polo BlueMotion equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) as standard, achieves the outstanding consumption and emission values thanks to longer gear transmissions, optimised aerodynamics and measures within the engine. The five-gear manual gearbox was given a longer transmission with gentle characteristics, which reduces the rpm level. The revised front section in particular contributes to the improved aerodynamics with lower air resistance (cw = 0.30). Wheels fitted with low-resistance tyres as standard complete the technical improvements.
