For all its philosophy of thrift, the Passat BlueMotion develops a considerable power output. Propelled by a 77 kW (105 bhp**) TDI engine, which is of course equipped with a diesel particulate filter, it easily copes with mountain passes even when fully laden. On the motorway it is capable of top speeds of 193 km/h. On the Passat BlueMotion, the "Plus" multifunction display in addition incorporates a gear recommendation: when system identifies that the driver should shift up a gear to maximise fuel economy, a small arrow lights up.
