| 06/05/2008 I Innovation Development of the BlueTDI successfully completed At the Vienna International Engine Symposium (24 to 25 April) Volkswagen presented the production version of the BlueTDI. One of a new generation of turbodiesels, this engine has been developed especially for North America. The common rail engine is based on the high-tech TDI introduced in Europe in 2007 and first installed in the Tiguan. The European engine already meets the limits of the Euro 5 standard, which will come into force in autumn 2009. The four-cylinder unit has been especially re-engineered for specific USA operating conditions with modifications within the engine and a NOx storage reduction catalyst. |

Power is transmitted via a dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and permanent four-wheel drive (4MOTION). The saloon model's top speed is an electronically governed 250 km/h. The model's visual attractions include its "Biscay Blue, pearl effect" paint finish, the typical R series bumper styling and matching aluminium-look double ribs in the upper radiator grille. |

This technology has improved the 2.0 l TDI engine's fuel economy by up to 0.7 l/100 km. But its power delivery betrays nothing of this new efficiency: a maximum torque of 320 Nm can be called upon at any time between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm. (Fuel consumption: 5.8 – 6.4 l/100 km; CO2 emissions: 153 – 169 g/km) |
