CertificationConfirmation of compliance with an international standard, awarded by an independent organization. Some Volkswagen plants are already participating in a joint program of environmental management and EC Eco-Audits on a voluntary basis. Strictly speaking, these do not amount to certifications, but rather validation of the environmental declarations for a specific plant. Validation means that a government-approved environmental auditor or an auditing organization examines the environmental management system of a plant and declares the validity of the environmental declaration for a limited period. The word validation has been replaced by certification to remove a source of confusion and to simplify matters.
