Catalytic ConverterA catalyst accelerates chemical reactions without itself undergoing any permanent change. The catalytic converter used in petrol-operated cars has an active coating of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium and, in some cases, palladium too. It is capable of degrading all three (three way) of the exhaust constituents which are subject to statutory limits, namely »carbon monoxide, »hydrocarbons and »nitrous oxides with an efficiency of more than 90 percent, providing the engine is running with an optimum fuel/air mixture ratio (this is the job of the lambda probe). »oxidation catalytic converter.
